More than 45,000 people fled Michoacan in 2004 alone, most of them from rural communities, lured to the United States by the prospect of an hourly minimum wage equivalent to a day's worth of work at home, or in the case of many women, by a marriage proposal from a young man who had established himself there.

Drug Shootouts Kill 12 in Northern Mexico

More assault rifles were found scattered around the truck; they apparently belonged to the dead men, and large numbers of spent shells were found nearby, but it was not immediately clear whether the dead men had fired their weapons in self-defense.
 

More Killings Near Mexi Beach Resort

The bodies, all apparently shot at close range, turned up along an 80-mile stretch of highway between the state capital, Culiacan, and the beach resort of Mazatlan.
